KIDDING ASIDE SUPPORTS WORLD
POPULATION AWARENESS WEEK
20-26 October 2002
Population and the Next
Generation: Youth and Adolescents
The world today has the biggest ever generation
of young people between the ages of 15 and 24, most of them living in the
developing world. 57 million young men and 96 million young women
currently living in developing countries are illiterate. Only 76% of girls
compared to 96% of boys, receive some kind of primary education. Over 70
million young people are currently unemployed and looking for work. The
tremendous social, economic and demographic changes that are taking place in the
world today place adolescents and youth at a critical juncture. The
challenge is to provide them with the necessary support they need to realize
their full potential, and enable them to positively contribute to the future of
their society.
