GOVERNMENT FERTILITY PROPOSALS SHOULD BE
ABORTED SAY KIDDING ASIDE
Kidding Aside (The British Childfree Association)
today criticised Government plans to make infertility treatment more widely
available on the NHS.
"This shortsighted move by the Government
will do nothing to address the real problems faced by infertile people and
places an even greater burden on an already overstreched NHS"
said Chairman of Kidding Aside, Jonathan McCalmont.
He continued "The
Government seems incapable of tackling the real issue here which is the constant
pressure to have children. It is no wonder that many infertile people go to huge
lengths to try to conceive when there is so much pressure from society to have
children in order to be a 'real' family".
"What the Government should be doing is
promoting the fact that in a country whose total population continues to
increase as a result of an expanding elderly population, NOT having children is
a positive and responsible lifestyle that should be encouraged."
"NHS funding of infertility treatment is yet
another example of taxpayers subsidising what is basically a lifestyle choice.
With so much publicity about delayed treatment for lifesaving operations and the
lack of availability of more expensive drugs it is difficult to know how the
Government can justify any NHS expenditure on infertility treatment."
